Earth 911

If Mother Earth could dial a phone, surely she would. We all know the damage pollution causes, the dangers of global warming, the disapperance of animal and plant species. It's sometimes easy to get discouraged and wonder what you can do. We at B. firmly and whole-heartedly believe in the words of English philosopher Sydney Smith:

"It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do little—do what you can."

To us it's Earth day every day! We try in all we do to B. good—to kids, their parents and our planet. This often means making choices about materials for our packaging that cost a little more money: whether that is PET #1, the most recyclable plastic, polypropylene PP for our reusable bags, 100% recycled Kraft paper for our boxes, soy inks for our printing, or simply sometimes foregoing packaging altogether. It always always means using recycled and recyclable materials and encouraging parents to do the same.

We have fun with this. Take a look here at a collection of B. Green messages from our packaging. The words of our übertalented (and überhilarious) copywriter Amy Flanagan infuse our brand with mirth and merriment. Not a day goes by we don't giggle around here!

And we get serious too. We promote Earth911.com on our packaging because this website is one-stop source for where you can recycle almost anything, at a location near you! It's the largest and most comprehensive recycling directory in the USA. Try it; you'll be amazed. I used it to find a place to recycle a dozen tangled, mangled strands of non-working Christmas lights that had been taking up space in my basement for years.

This Sunday, April 22, is Earth Day 2012 and the Earth Day network is mobilizing a billion acts of green. Millions of people around the globe of all nationalities and backgrounds will Mobilize the Earth by voicing their appreciation for the planet and demanding its protection, standing united for a sustainable future and calling upon individuals, organizations, and governments to do their part.

Join in? Even by just showing our kids how to shut the lights or the faucet off we help a little. And lots of littles add up to a lot.

BBBBB — B. and Baby Buggy Bedtime Bash!

The thought of recycling baby gear to help families in need made our hearts parum pum pum, that's why we were delighted to sponsor an event as powerful as Jessica Seinfeld’s Baby Buggy Bedtime Bash in New York City's Central Park on June 1st. Jessica founded Baby Buggy 10 years ago with the motto “Love. Recycled.” Hold that thought in your heart for a moment. Feels great, doesn’t it? With that loving motto Baby Buggy has donated over 4.1 million items ranging from cribs to onesies to families in need.

With a few months to prepare, our team got together and made lists of all things necessary to create a land of B. in Central Park. We designed cute B. t-shirts, ultra-colorful B. tattoos, made B. patterned pyramids and carefully selected inflatable kiddy pools that we filled with 500 Fish & Splish fishies inside. As families began to swarm into Victorian Gardens (in the sweltering 86 degree 90% humidity heat might I add), children came straight to the swimming pools to play a game of catch, get tattooed…and dip their little hands in the cool water. To see the look in their eyes when they caught their own fishy was wonderful—they were so proud to be certified fisher-kids! Even celebrity guests joined in the fun, because their little ones could not stay away from B. (or our water in that heat!)

While a group of kids were huddled around us yelling, "I want a tattoo! I want a tattoo!" a little one in the background said, "I want a ta-three!". That one's going in our quote gallery :)

We lined up a great wall of You Hues, 700 of them, in a path that led visitors out the exit of Wollman Rink park. Kids walked away with You Hues over their heads, moms balancing them on their strollers and dads juggling a child in one hand and a You Hue in the other.

Besides watching children have a B. fishy, B. splishy good time, it was most important for us to continue the love-chain. B. loves giving back. We donate a dime of every toy purchased to Free The Children, our chief Toy Maker Gisela has hand-delivered toys to children in Kenya. Like Jessica’s motto, ours “Do what you love and do good” drives what we do and the karmic satisfaction of knowing we are making a difference.

While we ensure all our packaging is recyclable, we whole-heartedly encourage all toys to be recycled the old fashioned way—by passing them on to another little one. That's why we love Baby Buggy and their mission to help families by providing gently used essentials that facilitate the lives of hard-working parents who sometimes can't make ends meet. There are many places in your community that collect baby essentials, why not send your gently used items over to your community centers? Your heart will parum pum pum too.

It’s Christmas and Hannukah around here!

Passover? Easter? When’s that?? We are neck-deep and hands-full and sleep-deprived into Christmas and Hannukah!

We can’t wait to show you our brand-new creations for this year's holiday season (we can’t because our competitors read this blog too.....). But trust us—we have great new toys coming. The kind of toys we love making, for our kids and your kids and all kids. Everywhere.

Toys that are:

We count our blessings every day. So even when we are confused as to which season we’re in, or what year we are talking about, we love love love what we do.

We hope it shows.

Don't the best holiday gifts come from children?

Most shoppers know today is Cyber Monday, but did you also know it’s also Green Gift Monday? The goal of Green Gift Monday, the brainchild of The Nature Conservancy, is for us all to take a moment to consider giving responsible, meaningful gifts.

We have the perfect present for all the Moms, Dads, Aunts, Uncles, Grammas, Grampies, Omas, Nannies, Noonas and anyone else who is important in your children’s lives. It needs no shipping, packaging – or even wrapping. It’s the gift of a child’s wisdom! What could make a better present than immortalizing the words of a child? Simply go to our quote maker, type in a funny, poignant, brilliant or just plain silly thing your child has said and turn it into beautiful, framable art. Or, if you’re far away, simply send the brilliance in an email.

Merry, happy, joyous, jolly anything!

B. GREEN on EARTH DAY and EVERY DAY!

We try, with humor and serious commitment (yes, the two can go hand-in-hand), to B. GREEN every day. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. We eat, sleep and breathe this motto.

With packages made from recycled materials that are easily recycled again. And printed with soy inks and water varnishes. With toys that come in pretty reusable bags instead of packaging. Bags we hope moms will reuse over and over. With packages that reverse to become gift wrap. No need to buy wrapping paper!

And even when we’ve had to use plastic in our packaging, we’ve invested in #1 plastic – the most widely recycled plastic available. (Bet your town recycles it!) To us, eco-friendly is more than a stamp or a trend or a day. It’s a commitment. To the world and the children in it.

So what do you think is more important? Treaty paper or toilet paper? :)
